Nasa is testing rovers that must one day drive on the moon and Mars. One small four wheeled rover is named Ernest. In a recent trial it crossed about sixteen miles of the Colorado desert on its own. It needed very little help from the people watching. The test shows the rover can handle steep and rough ground by itself. That kind of independence matters far from earth, where every command takes time to arrive. Each test brings a self driving explorer a step closer.
