A composite that heals its own cracks a thousand times

A new composite can heal its own cracks a thousand times. Scientists 3D-print a healing agent onto fiber layers and add carbon heaters. Running electricity melts the agent, which flows into cracks and rebonds the layers. The team tested 50-millimeter delaminations through a thousand cycles over forty days. They calculate a part healed every three months could last over 125 years. That far exceeds the 15 to 40-year design life of composites in aircraft and turbines.
