Teenage girls tear their knee ligament 29 times more often than adult women. Researchers at Scottish Rite for Children found that most of these injuries happen during menstruation. Right after a period starts, hormones loosen connective tissue, and knee joint looseness jumps by 42 percent. This makes the injury risk over four times higher. Later in the cycle, hormones make muscles stiffer and less flexible. The team now has a one million dollar grant to test if training with hormonal changes can help. They track athletes with a 3D motion capture system that needs no markers.
