Hunger does not directly cause anger. A study by Jennifer MacCormack at the University of North Carolina found that being hangry depends on context. Over 400 people online viewed images meant to stir emotions. Then they rated neutral pictographs. Hungry participants who wrote about their feelings felt no more negativity. But hungry participants who ignored their emotions reported more stress and hatred. Another experiment had 200 students either eat or fast. Some wrote about their emotions before a frustrating task. The ones who did not self-reflect were harsher and more upset. Hunger acts like a nudge, not a trigger. Self-awareness decides if plain hunger turns into anger.
